Lone Protester

"...... I told my wife that I probably wasn?t coming home that night because I was going to protest until I got arrested and taken to jail. In route to the job I called my son and told him what I was planning to do. I asked for his support, gave him my digital camera and had him park his truck across the intersection from the job with the camera and take pictures of me protesting that job......"

In spite of the fact that he is a fan of “Michael Savage” I feel his pain, getting 4 to 5 dollars an hour for that kind of work. You know that they most likely are not paying Workman’s Comp, Social Security, likely paid off the books.

Lets look at another situation, I’ll, make this one hypothetical but it is happening every day, the situation is the same, except the people it is happening to cant make it to the job site to picket.

This guy had this Info. Tech. at a large company, a job he went to school and thought he had found his niche for, at least till he finished the education he was inquiring about via the University of Phoenix. One day his boss calls him into the office and says his job has been sent to India, here is your severance pay, your pro bated vacation pay and another week’s pay. Security will escort you off the premises. The end result is the same, yes it has to be fixed, it is even affecting the defense of our country, as a lot of our defense production is being taken offshore.

I gotta get this back to the top. If I can scrape any change out of the couch that isn't already earmarked for another damn bill then he's gonna get it.

Can someone tell me, why do you put $5000 worth of copper on your porch?

What is it for? Just decorative?

Re: Lone Protester

I don't know about 5000 as I have never priced the job, but the copper will outlast the house. I paid 4000 a few years ago to have my roof redone (shingles) and will likely have to do it again in 20 years. Pay 5000 now and never do it again. Although I had my whole house redone. Some of the houses around here have copper on the porches and bays as a decorative I guess.

Don't turn this into a discussion of how to spend your money.

This is about one man standing up against illegal immigration!

Heresy, I tell ya', heresy - changing the focus of a thread in Docside Chat. With people stealing outside AC units and power distributor transformers for the copper, I'm surprised copper roofing is affordable by anybody.

What we need is a larger and more mobile "INS" or "ICE" as it is known now.
Call me a racist or whatever but the construction industry as well as others has been taken over by Hispanics.

Seems you ought to be able to make a phone call about a worksite where direction and communications is done primarily in Spanish and have someone check it out.

You cannot get a roofer where I live that doesn't employ illegals.

Sorry, but the part of the solution is to bust the chops of the folks that employ them. Not the only part of the solution but a significant part.

....and I've sure many of us are guilty of looking the other way if WE are getting the good deal on some labor.....

Not me. I can get a wetback for 6 dollars a hour. I instead hired two white boys ages 16 and 18 to help me today. I paid them 7 an hour. They busted their azz so nobody tell me that kids today won't work or that the wetbacks are doing the jobs nobody wants.

I build homes... I am an American. It's a tough market right now. I can't afford to pay for smoke breaks, I support anyone who is willing to work for a living, green, red, brown, black, white or whatever color. I don't appreciate welfare..........

You wanna work.... I'm all for ya. You wanna sit on your hump and bitc#, do it at home...

It all is a PITA, gasoline is really expensive, it makes lumber and nails expensive; people want a good job done inexpensively; it's really hard to do. Then Uncle Sam comes along and wants to tax the small business owner......my rear is sore!!!

What IS the right answer??? We all have to eat!!!

And of course you?re competing with contractors that hire/use, more that likely illegals. I admit that would be a tough nut to crack, and me being on the outside not going to make any suggestions on your craft.

Sure can make some on mine though, we are having plenty of trouble fighting the government in trying to keep the Mexicans from running there freight more than 200 miles into the US. Forgot to tell you. I drive a truck for a living, I drive for a private carrier and my uncle owns the company. Not likely to effect me. but here plenty of bitching on the road. They come in and there equipment is not up to the same standards of ours, there drivers, work like therepossessed, and drive the same, all over the road, that is because they have most likely driven six, seven hundred miles, before they came into the US., Spent about three hours at the border getting HA,HA, legal, could have another three hours to go to make there delivery, plus unloading time. These guys are in the country legal, and the government is trying to get it where the can run all over the country. In my opinion it is big business trying to keep wage down.If they get that thru it will only be a matter of time before the illegals start driving their trucks with forged CDL licenses, if their not now.:(

Re: Lone Protester

I am constantly trying to find ways to build more efficiently using newer technology and construction techniques. The cost of materials keeps going up, much faster than the price of homes I might add. I don't employ anyone really, everyone that works for me is a 1099.

My block layer is an older black gentleman who is a hard worker, he does a great job and doesn't charge as much as his competition. He has a few hispanic guys that work for him that have been with him for several years; I don't know about their status here in the country. I do know that his crew works hard all day long, no smoke breaks, no sitting around under a shade tree; they break for a 30 minute lunch, otherwise it's all about the business of getting the block work up. The crew I used before this one took nearly twice as long to complete a job, and they were 10% more expensive for the same work, there was lots of time spent "enjoying a smoke", and I noticed that nearly every day there was at least one member of the crew that was a no-show. Here in Florida, the work ethic is a joke, it amazes me that anyone is able to get anything done!
