86 johnson gt150 not charging

Some dummy (ME) crossed wires on the battery charger this past winter. The tach still works and it is running good but the battery goes down after a couple of trips to the lake. Charge her up and let her set for a month and she stays charged so I assume the battery is OK. Run her a time or two and down goes the battery. Would the tach still work if I had smoked the rectifier/voltage regulator? Thanks for any help.

Yes the tach will still work and yes I think the reg is gone.

When I replace the regulator should I replace the stator also?

Stator may be OK. Check with meter.
