I just recently purchased my first boat that has a 74 40hp evinrude. I'm not sure the correct fuel/oil mixture and in addition i'm having problems getting it to run correctly. It takes starter fluid to get it started and once i have it started anytime i throttle it, it sputters and dies shortly there after. It has new plugs and I put new gas in the tank too. It did sit for about 1.5 years before i purchased it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Now begins the obligatory starter fluid post . . .

NEVER USE IT . . . on a 2-stroke. It'll wash the lubrication right off your lower end bearings. Use premix in a squirt bottle if you need a starter boost.
