I just bought a 150 Black max, XR4. I worked great for a few days then the console started beeping. We found a cracked cap on the oil reservoir, and fixed it with a new cap and sensor. If we short the temp sensor, the alarm changes to a solid scream.

Does anyone know what the beeping is trying to tell us? Do we have to reset an alarm code somehow? We have a manual on order, but it will not be in for a few weeks. Is the beeping low oil, and the alarm module is just stuck?

Thank You

Beep beep beep...is an oil warning. A constant Beeeeeeeep is an overheat warning or a component failure warning. The oil in the reservior that had the cracked cap has to be absolutely full to the point of overflowing. As soon as the level drops below the neck, you'll get beep beep beep..... If you get a constant Beeeeeep with the key on and engine cold it's a failed alarm module, failed alarm, or a short in the overheat sensor or overheat wiring.

Thank You Willy B. The sensor on the oil now works, and we can measure it closing and opening.
Still beeping.
There appears to be a "Hall Effect" sensor in the oil pump, with a magnet on the plastic drive shaft. It measures fine, and the shaft to the oil pump turns.
We have asked our local mechanic, and it is looking like the alarm module may have failed. Parts are on order. We will let you know which part makes the difference.
Nice to know what the alarm modes are.
Thanks again to Admiral Wright.

i had a problem like that with my 150 merc, it was a bad ignition module, there are two and its better to change both at the same time since they are about 300 a piece, if you only change one the other could send a bad signal and short them both out then you'll wind up buying three of them, good luck!

The oil alarm gets several signals.
1. If the connection to the oil resevoir is closed, it alarms. Test by disconnecting one of the 2 wires.

2. It gets a pulse tranin from one of the switchboxes. I think it is cylinder #2, but it makes no difference. To test if that pulse is there, either check it with a DVA, or move the wire from the alarm module to any other known good cylinder.

2 continued. It gets a pulse train from the hall effect sensor in the oil pump.

If either pulse train is missing, it alarms
if both are missing, it does not alarm (engine not running)

if both pulse trains are there, and you disconnect the oil tank sensor and it still alarms, the module is bad.

It will run the power on self test any time the power is interupted. That is a long beep, and a series (4 or so) of short beeps. If it keeps doing that, either the power is flakey, or the module is bad.

hope it helps

I have since learned, from experience, that if your battery is low it will not give you all five post (power on self test) beeps, but maybe be missing one or 2. It will also be flakey and unreliable. (because the battery voltage is low)

hope it helps
