Trying to remove screw on top of alpha 1 upper shift shaft. Mercruiser manual Page 4B-18 notes: "It may be necessary to apply heat to shift shaft lever screw to aid in removing".

This stubborn little screw calls for loctite upon installation, so it is giving me fits. I have a small propane torch, will this suffice to heat this thing up enough? Should I get it red hot and then try to turn it or let it cool again? Should I tap it while it is hot?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I'd take it to a Merc dealer and let them break it and have to eat the repair

WE won't eat the repair, WE have enough common sense to say that it's seriously corroded and we will try to remove it to the best of our ability, but WE will not eat the repairs if it breaks.

Give me a break, you think a dealer has never seen this problem before? we are Merc trained techs, not miracle workers.

Thanks Don, you beat me to the punch....I agree that this knucklehead's response was not only out-of-line, but not useful at all.

I got the little bugger out. It wasn't corroded, at all, I just think the LOCTITE was kickin' my butt. The screw slot itself wasn't in the best of shape, but I heated it up pretty good and she turned about a quarter turn before I had to heat it up again for about four times total, then I was able to muscle it out the rest of the way. I suppose that rubber bushing now needs to be replaced as I could smell it cooking......

Is there a way to close out these threads so we don't waste any more energy on this?

My 2 cents is a propane torch will barely light a cigarette in the wind...(sorry ..just realized this will do a bump..)
If it aint red and green...its a Bic..

FWIW.... I had to heat mine up a couple weeks ago to get it out, I also used a propane torch and tried to be real careful about not heating the seal..... It don't work, toasted the seal any way, but at last the new ones are cheap and go in easy.

Yes, as the thread originator you can request that a mod (like Don S.) lock the thread. They usually will honor the request.
