hey guys

i just had a 100 hp johnson rebuilt and after about 20 hours the drive shaft and pinion went. the gent the did the rebuild had felt as i had drove hard. this is not the case as i have benn driving (not fixing)boats most of my life. i noticed the idle was high at hte beginging of the rebuild (1100 rpm) and really gave a good hard bang into to drive. he said it was ok, he has agreed to repair under warranty, i just wanted to know if there is anything i ought to be aware of so as this does npot happen again. any advice would be appreiated.

thanks

650 rpm in forward gear or thereabouts is the general rule of thumb.

It'll be 800-900 in neutral in the water. At 1100 it's probably a bear to shift out of gear. If he had to set it that high to keep it ideling something is wrong.

Shifting at 1100 rpm is very hard on the gears. And, like I mentioned, it'll make docking an adventure if it won't come out of gear easily. Since he set it up to shift differently that it was designed for he's responsible for all damage. Gears, docks, fiberglass, legs etc.
