89 200 Black Max overheating

I have an 89 200 black max that I am trying to get the rest of the year out of. Motor runs exceptionally well for it's age and has been well cared for. I noticed when running between 1800-3000 RPM's the temperature gauge goes way up and the alarm goes off. I have to slow it down and or throttle up and the engine will cool right down. New water pump and thermostats were recently installed. I was told that the poppet valve may be causing this problem but I am not familiar with this. Any thoughts?

Sounds about right to me. Replace the whole assembly.

New:
-carrier
-grommet
-poppet valve
-spring
-diaphragm
-water deflector
-spring.....

probably cost you about $20-30 in parts.

Also, don't go crazy on those bolts. Given some heat and back them off slowly.

starboard side at the bottom of the block. Looks like a figure eight with 4 to 5 bolts. You will see a hose coming to it. Real simple fix, had it done in 15 minutes.

It worked perfectly. I ran 9 miles offshore yesterday and the temperatur gauge stayed nice and cool the whole time.

Ralph,

Glad to hear that it is fixed. Just curious, What is you temp gauge reading at idle and slow trolling speed? Is your temp guage in numbers or the standard Mercury hot, cold?

I have a 1992 200 Mercury. The motor was re-built 2 seasons ago and all cooling components have been replaced within the last six months. At a slow troll mine is reading around 190deg and at WOT around 160deg.

Just wanted to see how cool yours runs. Thanks.
