Re: Stator/Timing base condition question, re. rough idle

Thanks for the heads up, I wasn't looking forward to pulling that all apart....
The plugs all look the same, pretty clean and a little wet. No real difference in carbon or fouling.

Is there a way of checking the reeds, ie a visual check through the throat that would show anything. It seems when I looked last that the were all closed tight and nice and clean so I didn't think much of it.

Thanks,
Evan

You can't see them thru the throats.

Well, now I wonder what I was looking at....whatever it was, it sure looked good :)

It was too busy today to even pull the cover off the boat, I hope to take a look at it tomorrow. I'm gonna run it up again and see if I can leave pull some wires again. I'll leave it running on three cyl. longer this time, maybe I'll have better luck seeing a difference.

Thanks,

E

I would have another look at the stator. A similar problem vexed me with a V4. Seemed to run intermittently at idle, but run better at high rpm. It was a bad stator. Did not output enough at idle to fire all four every time. Missed occasionally on random plug wires. Seemed to run OK at normal speed. Specifically, check it's output with a peak-reading voltmeter. While using that voltmeter, check the output on the timer base too.

That would seem to be a fairly accurate description of what I've been running into. I don't have a peak reading voltmeter, can it be done any other way with a regular voltmeter?

Thanks

You can purchase an adapter to use with your meter to make it peak reading. It is a DVA Adapter. Quite a few places to get one online. Prices range from 25 to 100. On ebay there is a store that sells them for 25. the link is below. Copy and paste it without the quotes into your browser window. I have not personally purchased or used one, but am considering purchasing one for myself.

A more trusting one may be from Mastertech Outboard for $42. "http://www.maxrules.com/fixtools640.html"

Thanks, that's what I thought. I'll check out the leads and see what I can find.

Re: Stator/Timing base condition question, re. rough idle

Broke down and bought a new meter that can measure peak volts (measures avg., min & max, Fluke 114), when I test between the brown and brown/yellow wires (got that from rapair.com, hope that's correct) I'm getting 122.9 v/ac & resistance between the two wires is 388 ohms, both values below the troubleshooting chart figures. From this, I'm gathering that the stator is no good and needs replacement. This sound reasonable to those in the know?? I checked the resistance between the white & pink, green, blue, purple on both plugs from the timer base and they all came back @ 41 ohms (within specs). I'm not sure how to check the voltage output from the timer base that ccnstlr recommended, any suggestions?

Thanks,
E

Use the procedure at the following site to perform the tests.

Re: Stator/Timing base condition question, re. rough idle

I recently worked on a friends boat whose readings on the stator were low in the voltage category and high in resistance and the stator proved to be the culprit. The tests don't lie. If you performed them correctly and they are out of spec, then they are usually bad or are going bad. Hence the reason there are specs in the first place and test procedures. Sometimes I hate to think that they are bad if they are off by just a little, but they usually are. Less than 5 ohms or 5 volts difference I may question the meter calibration, but an more than that, they're out of spec in my book.

I'll have to still do the tests on boatpartstore, thanks for the link, but it appears as if the tests I did were correct. I'm going to order a stator and see what comes from it. I thought I did the second test on that website correctly yesterday, but only got a fraction of the voltage. I'm curious to try it with the new meter tomorrow.

Thanks for the help, I'll update with the results tomorrow.
