1956 30 hp evinrude....took it out today for the first time....ran great except..the shear pin failed, did not hit anything, was simply pulling away from fishing hole, throttling up when it gave. ?????
In the pics below you can see a black streak...it is coming from a hole next to the middle bolt that attaches the lower end housing to the midsection,(there are two holes on each side) What might it be?

Re: 2 questions

The oil you see, as I have recently found out is normal, unburnt fuel/oil mix.

As for the shear pin, might have just been old? Damaged back in the day?

Re: 2 questions

The shear pin could have been the wrong size.

Re: 2 questions

If you check the FAQ you will see a thread about your mysterious black carbon. It is leftover fuel/oil mix like stated above

Re: 2 questions

If you still have the original propeller and nut, the pin was part number 302566, 1/4" x 1 1/8" Naval Bronze.

Replacement propellers and nuts use 304575 1/4" x 1 15/32" Stainless Steel.

The bronze ones will wear just from shifting gears. Eventually it will wear itself in two. So it probably broke as a result of long term wear and tear.

Thanks y'all........I kinda thought it may be unused energy, just wanted to confirm, this is the first time I had this motor in the water, again needed confirmation about the shear pin, I dont always trust my thoughts.
