exhaust leak maybe??

I have a "ticking type" noise coming from low on the motor back side. i took the outdrive off to rule out u joint noise. this outdrive is a SEI116 installed a month ago. the u joints look great, but the u joint bellow had some oil in it, not milky oil, just oil. gimbal looked good too.

then i took apart the exhaust riser inside the engine compartment. the rubber elbows joining the pieces of cast exhaust tubing look good with no rips or tears or anything. exhaust flappers looked good to.

The only thing I havent checked is the "o ring" gasket where the bottom most part of the exhaust tube connects to the gimbal housing.

Anyone ever run into this noise?? it definintly sounds like an exhaust leak would on a car, and you can smell fumes really badin the engine compartment while its in the driveway and you can also smell it when boat is underway in water..


Somebody please help me!!!!!! so i dont have to sell it to the highest bidder on eBay!!!

Yes, an exhaust leak from a single cylinder sounds a lot like a bad tappet or rocker clicking. I've had it a couple of times when a gasket failed after the header bolts loosened off.
With engine idling, feel around with your hand to try to find the leak.
