Hello
Hope some one can help me I have a short shaft engine on my boat that is playing up , I have been offered a
20 hp Johnson long shaft outboard engine . . it has , I have been told, a expansion section in it that is removed would make it short shaft.
I am not sure of the year of the engine but we think it?s a 70s- early 80s model.
Can any one tell me if it is easy to change the shaft length
thanks
Gary

Re: Long shaft to short shaft

I converted my Dad's 1962 Evinrude 40hp bigtwin short shaft to a long shaft, with a factory shaft extension kit, about 40yrs ago, it was quick and easy, and I was not very mechanically inclined back then. I don't know if the process is the same on your later model motor, but If it is anything like that, it's no problem, But try to get a definite answer if it is before you do it.

It is not a big deal to convert, but I think what the op is talking about is that the motor came with the expansion built in. I am aware of the motor but don't know exactly what year it was started. I'm pretty certain the 1985's have it, not sure about earlier years.

Depending on the year there should be a shiny silver plug about the size of a 50 cent piece in the side of the block with numbers stamped in it. Some had the numbers on a tag on the lower cowl under the carb. there are some other locations that I am unsure of.

Re: Long shaft to short shaft

That is only the serial number. The C means it was assembled in Canada. Otherwise, it doesn't tell us much.

The M is OMC's logo.
