steering cable replacement

I have a 19 ft Offshore center console that I have to replace the teleflex steering cable on. I can see where it starts and ends but the rest is hidden between the outer hull and the floor of the boat. What is the best method of replacing this?
I was thinking of tying an end of the new cable on to the end of the old and pulling it through.

You have the right general idea as that is the way it is done. Some boats are provided with pull strings in the rigging tunnels but many are not. Go slow and take your sweet time in fishing that new cable in so you don't nick or otherwise damage the other engine cables in the tunnel.

I managed to pull the old cable out and feed through the new one. The new one is about 3 feet longer than the old one. What can I do with the extra?

Any ideas? I was thinking of just coiling the extra below my helm in the center console.
