I have tried twice to install electronic ignition. It is not working. Can anyone tell from the serial number below which distributor I may have. Volvo Penta #6Y70205 / 1077 ( AQ240A ) Clip down cap. I believe that I am trying to install the wrong module, the one I have tried is Pertonix Ignitor II #91581

If this is the correct one, what could be happening. The engine sounds as if it is firing the wrong order in the cylinders, never starts. Checked for spark, good, bypassed any possible resistor, made sure ground was good. Checked and had 12volts. Made sure the install of the module was for counter clockwise. Any help would be appreciated. file:///Users/cardensmith/Desktop/Distributor.jpg

Why don't you call Pertronix?

I have talked to them twice. They have sent me a pictoure only of the rotor to identify the distibutor. They are stating I have the correct one based on the rotor style.

based on what you wrote,to me it sounds like you removed the distributor to install the pertronix and the timing isn't right rather than the pertronix being defective. just my $ .02

Is the rotor pointing at #1 post/wire when #1 piston is at TDC of compression?
Does the clockwise sequence of the wires match your firing order?

Re: Pertronix Ignitor II

I have tried adjusting the timing. No help.
II have not checked the rotor position in regards to TDC on each cylander.
I have made sure the plugs are in correct firing order. I am 1st off just trying to determine if I have the correct module. My distributor is old and has no markings on it at all, I can only go by serial number of engine. Is there a web site to check which distributor I have?

Was this engine running before you tried the conversion? Have you removed the distributer from the engine? Or only removed the distributor cap to fit the ignition module?

Re: Pertronix Ignitor II

Yes the chart was most helpful, thanks.

It turns out I did have the correct module for my distributor. I have found out through pertronix that the module itself is out of spec, meaning, that the sensor is too far away from the magnetic sleeve. Therefore, no matter how many modules i try it will never work. I have been told they can move the module in to correct the problem. Its rare but has happened before, go figure. Thanks for the help.
