I am looking to have some upholstery work done on my boat and was wondering what is a good going rate to be charged. I know that rates vary from state to state, but I am just looking to see what others are paying. What would you pay for the following to have recovered, please include which state you are in:

1.) Rear Couch (8ft Long)

2.) One panel in the open bow area (2'x4')

3.) A cushion that you sit on in the open bow area

4.) A helm chair

i have found that auto upolsery shops are cheaper than marine. there are to many 'ifs' in your question. button, pleats, flat surface, who supplies material. etc.

Re: Upholstery Fair Prices???

I have been looking around for some one to do mine. Some of these places are nuts. My boat has a bench all the way around broke up into 5 sections and all i need is the vinyl replaced, the wood is good and the foam is fine. i have heard from $300 per seat section to $400 for all of it from some little old lady in the country. I like the old lady in the country but she isn't going to sewn anything she is just going to wrap it, so for 400 bucks i am going to wrap it myself and just not look at it. $100 for material and a box of SS staples. Good enough for something that will get bait, beer, and worse on it.

Im in the process of finishing my interior and found that the prices of new seats is cheaper than to refinish them. I have a pair of sleeper seats on my boat that fold out to a bed. The upholstery shop wanted like 500 each to finish them, i ordered them out of a catalogue for 200 each, new bases and all, cant beat that!

How difficult is it to wrap a cushion on a boat rear couch? There's only one section of the couch at the top that needs to be re-done. The sides have stitching so I am not sure if I could just wrap that portion without having to re-stitch. The picture shows which section I am trying to redo.

I had my seats redone over winter last year. Seats are about 6' long bench. Front also flips out for rearward seating. Seat across back is 6' with storage cabinets behind it. All wood was replaced with marine plywood. All in all ALOT of material & wood. Cost me $560.
Had it done by the Amish. Excellent work at excellent prices.
Would have cost about 1200+ at upholstery shop.

Do you want the job done, or the job done right? A fair price is the price you are willing to pay to have the work done. You get what you pay for. Any cliche's I've left out? :D

On a more serious note, I'd go with someone I felt comfortable with doing the work, after seeing some examples of previous work. You are going to pay for material, craftsmanship, and service. Some cheaper shops will give you the first 2, with the second being questionable, and forget about the 3rd. Better shops you will get better service ( which is important if you aren't happy with the work for whatever reason ).

Upholstery isn't an easy job. If it were, these guys wouldn't be in business.

Re: Upholstery Fair Prices???

The best way to appreciate another mans work is to try it yourself.

I had a good friend the recently passed on. He was a world class violin maker. Sometime when he was at his booth at a festival someone would come around and complain about his prices. He would take out a pocket knife and stab it into a block that had the drawing of a fiddlehead on it. "Carve me a fiddle head" he would say, "It doesn't have to look like much." There would be a long pregnant pause. "I think you will find my prices quite reasonable."

I would agree that the mail order people are a good bet as replacement is cheaper than reupholstering if you have to hire it done. Getting marine grade vinyl is very important if it is going to last and pay back your investment. The correct material is not inexpensive in small lots.

Re: Upholstery Fair Prices???

old thread......

for anyone searching this topic...if you look at the pic it is at least 5 panels

it could be done with one....if recovered with one panel..(one peice of material)...same material....it would look like a "bubba" job...

you could try to sew panels togeather and then recover......how good are you?

if you want a profesional look....you gotta pay for it.....

if you read up on tashasdaddys comments....."button..pleats...all that costs money.....

what kind of look do you want?

oops

Re: Upholstery Fair Prices???

The upholstery in my boat consists of cushions for the two seats. I actually just replaced them with new ones from iboats for less than $120 delivered. I'm going to add one of those large coolers w/ the cushion on top near the transom to provide some additional seating when the boats done.
