I am having problems shifting into reverse on my 1975 Mercury 850. the controls were jamming and in my haste I flattened a cam in the control box. Now I have the controls working while disconnected from the motor. When I connect them it is the same problem so now I am facing a problem with the shifting mechanism inside the motor. Can someone get me started here? I have heard from different posts this is an easy removal and repair. 6 bolts to remove the lower unit. Then inspection of the splines and gears. Then replace. Is there anything special to checking the shifting hardware to make certain it is lined up to install? Thank you for your time.

Re: Mercury 850

Scribe a line on the trim tab for replacing at the same angle you have 1 nut hiden under the tab, put the unit in rev gear to align the shiftshaft on reinsallation drop the unit out after removal of the other 5 nuts. Before removing the rev. lock cam make sure of the position on the shaft for replacement and put her back together

Re: Mercury 850

PK, I recommend you remove the shift cable at the motor(bottom cable). Now start the motor and shift the motor into reverse by pushing the shift slide in the motor. If the goes into reverse smoothly, it is likely the MerControl is still not correct.
