Force 85 rebuilding questions...

My Force 85 (L-Drive) is currently being rebuilt... But there are a couple of questions that are being brought to our attention, by my brother-in-law mechanic... He's an unbelievable mechanic--extremely meticulous.

1.) There is a hose that connects the L-Drive to the Engine. It's roughly a 1 inch hose or so, and it's pre-formed. The Mercury site shows it as not available anymore. Are there any other after-market places to pick from? Any other suggestions???

2.) I read on here all the time, of how the carburetors need to be set RICH, as opposed to lean. I understand the concept... I even know what the desired setting is to be.... 7/8 turn -1 turn out. Where is the adjustment screw??? We can't find the thing anywhere?

3.) Finally, where do I find the serial number for the L-drive... I see on the Mercruiser parts site, the choices are 85LD9A, 85LD9B, or 85LD9C. I have found nothing like that on the boat, motor, or documentation... Where do I look?

4.) On automotive piston rings, there's a top and a bottom side. The Force rings are appearing to be the same on both sides, and doesn't appear to make a difference... is this correct?

TIA for any help... We're still a little new to this. I purchased a Force manual (Seloc) online, but I'm afraid it's a little too general for some of these questions. I think I'm gonna order a manual that I can have in my hands.

Re: Force 85 rebuilding questions...

The inside of the stock rings have a slight chamfer on one side that goes "UP". This is so combustion pressure can get behind the rings and force them out for a tighter seal on the power stroke. Some engines (obviously not yours) came with semi keystone rings and of course they only go in one way.
WISECO pistons come with a 2 degree tapered ring which is not interchangeable with stock and are marked "top".

Depending on which carbs you have, the adjusting needles may be in the fronttop of the carb and accessed through rubber plugs removed from the air cover. OR: they may be on the top rear of the carbs set at about a 45 degree angle from the centerline.

Now for the hose: Try your local auto store and look for a pre-formed water pump hose. The older V8s used to have them going from the pump to the block in about that size. You may get lucky.

Thanks, Frank!!! You are my new hero!

One more thing... The Anaerobic sealer... The Seloc manual shows vaguely where it goes between the crankcase and the block. It's basically on the perimeter of the crankcase, correct?

Perimeter of block and I also like to put some around the 3/8 inch bolt holes. Not critical if you have red spaghetti tubing seals but then you want to at least put it on the ends of the tubing where it butts against the bearings.

Re: Force 85 rebuilding questions...

Yet another question.... Does anyone know the torque specs for the 6mm and the 10 mm bolts for connecting the two halves of the crankcase??? This Seloc manual is horrible for specs... The guy is trying to re-assemble this as we speak (or e-mail)

Re: Force 85 rebuilding questions...

Ohhh! We can tell you are "Furrin"! Force never went metric to the best of my knowledge. They should be 3/8 head 1/4 X20 inch bolts holding the perimeter crankcase halves together and I think the torque is 70 inch pounds. The large bolts that actually do the work of holding the crankcase together at the bearings are 3/8 inch allen head (internal) and 9/16 capscrews (external)--Oops sorry, thinking of 4 cyl--3 cyl only has 9/16 head 3/8 bolts. Anyway, torque on them is 270 inch pounds. If by some chance they are metric, then the torque would be similar. Maybe even a little higher since metric threads are a little finer than SAE.

2 point um--um--um--------

Actually, I am quite boring at parties because I am a veritable fountain of useless trivia. People run when they see me coming.

Hey I have the same boat as you and was wondering if you ever found that hose. It is called a hardwall water intake hose here is the part #32-F695259-2 but is discontinued. What did u end up doing?
