Last weekend I took the boat out and tooled around the lake for a while. We pulled into the marina for lunch, and when we returned the motor wouldn't go into reverse. It had been working fine until then. Tonight, I pulled off the cowlimg to run the voltage and ohms test I found in another thread by J.Reeves. I noticed I had a fuel line leaking, so I took all the fuel lines off to replace them. Then I did the tests. Results were as follows.

In neutral, green to ground - 12V...Blue to ground - 0v
In forward, green to ground - 0v...blue to ground - 0v
In reverse, green to ground - .45v...blue to ground - .45v
both blue and green 6.3 Ohms to ground...green to blue, 12 ohms.

Does the engine need to be running to do these tests? If so, I will do them again in the morning after I replace the fuel lines. If not, where should I start looking for the problem? Thanks for any help.

The shift switch in the remote control flunked the test big time with those .45v readings. Has to be the switch and not the wiring because the green wire passed the neutral test.

The motor does not have to be running to do the electrical tests that you did. However, it does have to be running to actually shift because it is shifted by hydraulic pressure.

BTW, congratulations on a job well done in an orderly fashion in the electrical checkout. Surprising how many people just don't get it.

Edit: Tashas, you and I were typing at the same time. Just wnat you to know that the comment about not getting it wasn't aimed at you.

Re: 1970 60hp Johnson

Thanks, guys. I'm on my way to town to pick up new gas lines and will get them on and try the tests with engine running, just in case. So it seems I may have a switch problem? Guess the next step is to open the control box and check out the switch. This motor has acted up before going into reverse. Once or twice, I've had to kinda wiggle the control arm to get it to go into reverse, but it didn't work this time. Sure wish that repair manual would hurry up and get here, been on order for almost 2 weeks.

Re: 1970 60hp Johnson

Well, it seems the switch in the control box is bad. I called the local boat dealers here and they all said that the part was unavailable. One of them said it was possible to wire around the switch, but wouldn't recommend it, but said if I decided to they could do it at a rate of $80.00 per hour plus parts, and it might be a month before they could get to it (boat repair business must be good). The other one said they wouldn't do it. Could someone maybe give me a clue as to where I might find one, or tell me how to wire around it?
Thanks
