83 Johnson 70HP OB hesitation/dead spot...

Hi,

I have an 83 Johnson 70hp Seahorse OB that has what seems to be hesitation/dead spot in acceleration. As I push the throttle forward I get to a spot where the motor just stalls and sometimes just stalls to the point of stopping. If I run it for a while I can get by it if I just push pretty quick past it (Stall point) then it jumps to life. Any ideas as to what this could be? Seems to run pretty good otherwise.

Thanks,

Al

your carbs are gummed up a bit and would need to be removed, disassembled, and cleaned throughly including all passages

Would I just get a rebuild kit that would include gaskets and etc. then could I use auto carb cleaner on the parts?

Thanks!

Yes and Yes. Also make sure to clean all passages out with air or evena small wire to make sure there isn't any buildup in them.

The carb is the most likely culprit so hopefully a thorough cleaning as suggested above will resolve the problem. If not, start looking for an air leak somewhere in your fuel system (loose gas line connections etc.).

You might also try doing a careful link & synch on the carbs first. That might clear it up without the rebuild...but most likely you'll probably end up having to do the rebuild.

my 70 hp did the exact same until I figured out to give a quick hit of choke (without stalling it) before accelerating. This got rid of the problem instantly ever since.
