I just bought a 1966 33 hp evinrude ski-twin, runs beautiful but shifts in and out of gear super fast and gets worse with increased throttle. the lower unit was removed for water pump impeller replacement and the shift linkage was hooked back up correctly, I checked and double checked that. I know that the previous owner had the bottom end apart he said to replace a leaking gasket. I also put fresh lube in the lower unit and the drain screw has like a pin on the end? I had a really hard time getting the screw back in as the pin was hitting something in the gear case. I would appreciate any suggestions or advice before I tear it apart this weekend. thank you

That pin is not the drain screw. It is a pivot pin for a shift lever inside the case. The drain screw is that big headed straight slot plug on the bottom, just forward of the skeg. Looks exactly like the upper vent screw.

If it is any comfort you are about the 2 millionth person to do that.

Thanks F_R,

D'OH I noticed that as well this morning when i pulled the lower unit off, I also discovered why it wont stay in gear. seems when the previous owner replaced the impeller he didn't hook the shift linkage up right (i noticed this when I serviced the impeller) and by the looks of it he ran it like that and the clutch dog didn't like that as where it engages with the forward gear it is worn down to nothing. so guess I get to play mechanic this weekend!
thanks again.
