Gday all,
I have an Evinrude 85hp v4 (75 model, 85593e). One of the tilt-tube bushes is buggered, and needs to be replaced. I am really hoping someone out there can help me with the procedure for removing the stern brackets (also reffered to as 'transom mounts', 'swivel brackets', whatever they're called!), and the tilt tube. Problem is, the starbord side stern-bracket has the nut on the end of the tilt tube (which is easily accessible and removed), but also has a hex-shaped recess with another nut in it. The port side stern bracket ONLY has a recess with a nut in it. Someone told me that the nut which is recessed into the starbord stern bracket is not a nut at all, and is in fact just a spacer which isn't actually threaded onto the tilt-tube, but i don't think that would be the case, and because of the corrosion which is present i just cant tell by looking at it. Further adding to my insanity, the workshop manual i have (560 bloody pages) makes absolutely no reference whatsoever to this assembly (apart from how to use the grease nipples. duh?!).
I am relatively-competent in the field of automotive mechanics, but this is my very first experience with outboards, and i'm already going bloody crazy! (Cars don't have to contend with corrosion caused by salt water!)
If anyone, anyone at all, can help me i'd REALLY appreciate it!!
(the names' Paul, aatiling@hotmail.com) Cheers!
