Not sure of the head, but have you thought of getting a manual and rebuilding yourself? I did mine last winter, a force 125, never touched an outboard before, tore it apart, bored it over, and it's purring like a kitten. It's easier than you think, just as long as you can find the parts, which there are many online choices.

Re: 105hp chrysler head

i have SELOC outboard manual for years 1962-1984 it seems a bit intimidating trying to seperate which motor is which in the book
is it possible to get a engine specific rebuild manual:confused:
i know i can do the work it's just figuring out if i am using the right part of the book

Re: 105hp chrysler head

Don't worry about the head. ANY 4 cylinder Chrysler or Force head at least up to 1990 will fit. The bolt pattern is the same and The thermostat housing is the same. Unless you have a head off a big bore engine, (3.375 bore vs your 3.312 bore. 115 hp, 140 hp.) the combustion chamber diameter is the same. Big bore engines are about 1/16 diam larger but heads will still fit although they will give a little less compression ratio. ---Nothing to worry about though. You probably won't notice the slight reduction in horsepower.

Do you have the head gasket? If not, again, there was only ONE 4 cyl head gasket used for all years so you can't go wrong. Order one from whomever is cheapest. WISECO sells 'em for about 26 bucks plus shipping.

If you do not have the head bolts, buy GRADE 8 bolts--Carbon steel not stainless. Very important for strength. Regular bolts and grade 5 will not take the torque and combustion pressures. Torque them to 225 inch pounds in three steps say about 100, 180, then 225--using a circular pattern starting from the center two and working outward. This keeps you from warping the head. They are standard thread 5/16 diam bolts. But you need to check--I think some blocks used 3/8 diam bolts. But I don't think the 105 was one of them. Just double check before buying bolts.

Careful with the head bolts. Different heads were different thicknesses and two different lengths were used (all bolts on a given head are the same length though.) If you need to buy them, get them 3/4 inch longer than the head is thick. Again, if you need to buy bolts, buy hardened washers for under the heads--not lock washers

Frank thanks for the great info
i probably will do the rebuild myself
local people keep telling me that Chrysler motors are junk but from what i have read i think it is just like everything else, people have their favorite

Re: 105hp chrysler head

Chrystlercrew.com has manuals for your motor. Seloc is a bit vague, and sometimes misleading, that's the manual I used for my rebuild, got me through it, but kept me asking this forum questions.

Re: 105hp chrysler head

Frank, just curios what motor did you rebuild
i really like the look of mine on this boat even though i probably don't need it that big it should pull a skier up pretty quickly

also can anyone explain what a kicker motor is all about is it just a backup motor or is it meant for trolling?

Re: 105hp chrysler head

Let see--Rebuilt Chrysler:8, 15, 20, 55, 75, 90, 120, 125 ,140. Force: 90, 125. Evinrude: 70, 85. Merc/Mariner 115, 90--Need I go on?

Bass men use kicker engine to troll. Big engines don't troll slowly enough and foul plugs at trolling speeds. Others use a kicker as insurance. When I broke a prop shaft in the channel, My kicker took 2 hours to get me back to the dock, but I was not at the mercy of the tides, didn't need to beg for help, and an engine I bought for 25 bucks saved me at least 400 in tow charges

Re: 105hp chrysler head

thanks you are a great help
i will be asking tons of questions as i go :D

i talked to Franz over at chryslercrew and he has the engine specific manual for the motor so as soon as i get the extra money i will get it. have pay for the head first and setup a rebuild area in the garage, then get the motor off boat so much to do:eek:

people really run hot/cold about these engines had several people tell me to just junk it and get another but i figure that i have it and can get the parts a little at a time over the winter and be ready next summer
and prove them wrong:p

Re: 105hp chrysler head

Been there, Heard that, and it IS a great feeling proving them wrong, and in my case, there is no way I could, or can afford to buy a new motor, so the 500 bucks for parts and machining I spent, and the few weekends in the garage doing it myself were verymuch worth it. I carry a picture of the motor all torn apart on my workbench in the glove compartment of the boat, just to show my passengers.

It was a lot of fun too, now I find myself looking for people throwing away their motors, just so I can have something to tinker with.
