Looking to buy a tachometer for my 1970 evinrude outboard 40 hp just wondering if i need to find a special tachometer for a 2 stroke outboard or if any old tachometer would work.

This should be in the outboard section.. I doubt you will get any replies here as most of us know very little about your outboard..

Moreover, you need one that is for magneto ignition. Most outboards made nowadays use tachometers that are driven by the alternator. Those won't work on your 40. Good luck
