HELP! Broke the fin off my 18hp 1963 engine

Ok, so I have an 18hp Evinrude that I believe to be a 63 or 64 engine. It is a short shaft, pull start engine. It has a pair of those plastic fins bolted onto the original potmetal or cast aluminum slight fins that are part of the lower end. Today I hurt it. I broke off one side. In other words, the bolted on aftermarket plastic fin is gone and so is the piece of metal lower end that the fin bolted to. The lower end is still sealed and no oil leaked out, but the whole fin on one side is broken off.

Is there a place where I can buy a new or used housing for the lower end reasonably?

I did a little research and it looks like this is actually a 1962 engine. The number on the tag is 15036B-07722. The fin that is broken off is not the bottom vertical fin. It is the horizontal fin just above the prop (Only about 2 inches wide on each side, but now missing completely on one side).

I assumed that the part was a casting that could not be welded.

If it can be done successfully, can it be done while it is on the engine, or do you need to pull apart the bottom end? I would assume you should pull it apart, but have never done that before...

I would think it would make sense to put on a Stingray type one piece fin once the metal is fixed to add a little support all the way across instead of the cheaper 2 piece fins...

Well thank you. That is some great news. Since the fin is long gone, I guess they will also have to come up with a hunk of aluminum as well.

I happen to have some fabricators doing major stainless and alum fab for me at work right now, so it looks like I will need to buy someone a couple of cases of beer!!:D

Thank you for your quick response and I will let you know how it goes!

By the way, this engine is on the back of my 7.5 foot Wooster Hellion and is great fun. See the link if you are interested.:)
