Hi guys, a buddy gave me a nice speedboat with an old johnson 140hp seahorse on it (white cowling with orange decals), it needs a new lower unit and I checked the serial number on the transom bracket reads: Model no: E85MLCSA Serial no: J0001364 and is green in colour so definitely not the original bracket for this motor, then on the engine I found a round silver plate with this on "J140TLCSA and B04241" can anyone please verify the info year etc. on this motor for me please as I need to find a new lower unit ..... as my knowledge on jonny/rudes are limited ... how difficult would it be to find a lowerunit or maybe get the current one reconditioned?

Re: Old Johnson details ....

The CS in the serial identifies them both as 1980 models. The J on one is a Johnson 140, the E is an evinrude 85 hp. Looks like someone put a 140 powerhead on an 85 midsection. There are tons of lower units out there for this engine. They are the same for a number of years in this vintage-any 85 through 140 will work. Make sure you get a "long" one that has a 20 inch drive shaft-not the XL 25" model. EBAY is a good place to start looking.

J140tlCSa is a 140hp Johnson 1980. Strange serial number, made in Belgium. (that's what the B means)

EDIT: Not so strange after all. I just noticed you are in South Africa

Not sure the exact years but someone will.I know my 1981 johnson has a mid 90's lower unit on it.
At least it should be easy to find one.Make sure its the same length drive shaft and the shift rod is the same where it connects to the linkage..

A johnson dealer MIGHT have a serial number list. Never saw a published one.
