How to remove lower unit?

Can someone tell me what holds the lower unit on a 15hp Johnson 1991.I have removed 6 bolts near the foot and loosened the shifter cable near the foot but it still has something stopping it from coming out because I can get it down so far then it stops I have also tried turning the fly wheel while pulling down.

Loosened what shift cable? There is a brass shift rod connector with two screws in it, in the space where the gearcase has dropped down thus far. You have to completely remove one of the screws.

What's the bump for? FR explained it. There's a connector where the LU drops down tad. Undo 1 screw completely and it will come off.

Good information. Perhaps you guys should have a sticky with pics. I just joined up this morning, so I'm not sure what type of questions you guys allow. I searched for "gearcase removal" and I recieved 500 results. I am going to be doing mine soon. If all goes well I'll put it up.

Resist the temptation to pry it apart. I just replaced the impeller on a Merc some jack$ss did that to and damaged the LU.
