I have what appears to be a 1988 Merc 9.9 ourboard. Looks like its in excellent shape. I popped the cowl off to get a look at the motor. Everything is clean and looks new. I twist the throttle and all the linkages operate smoothly etc etc. I spin the flywheel by hand it moves freely and prop appears to spin with this movement. I figure I would give the pull start a tug. I attempt this and I can not get the rope to pull. Granted I am not trying to pull real hard because its on a motor dolly and may tip over. I haven't recieved my manual yet from my merc dealer. Does anyone have anythoughts.. I looked up under the housing where the rope is. It doesn't appear to be binding... Anyway, just looking for some suggestions before my manual arrives.

Re: Looking for some more merc 9.9 knowledge

The rope probably jumped off the pulley and is wedged between the pulley and housing. Remove the recoil assembly and reposition the rope. The most frequent problem I see with rope-start engines (lawnmowers, outboards, weed whackers, etc.) is that people feel they need to yank on the thing like they are starting a 100 HP engine. They either pull the rope all the way to end of its travel and/or they let the rope snap back into the housing when the engine starts. Either one will eventually break the spring, the rope, or the dogs. Pull the engine over until it goes against compression. Then a short tug is all that's necessary. If the engine is tuned properly and has fresh gas, it should start.

Thanks for the fast reply...I have solved the issue. However, I do have another question... Does anybody know what type of fuel connector it takes? (part number)
