tick over problems

hi i am running a 1996 johnson 50 vro. the motor us to rev to 5500 but now only revs to 4500 and also the motor stalls at tick over any suggestions to the cause of the problem thanks in advance

I figured out the typo "us" was really supposed to be "used" but what the heck is "tick over"? I'm not an Admiral so I need to be educated yet on tick over.

Besides whatever tick over is, if you have changed nothing else on your motor or boat, you should check compression on all cylinders.
