Hi everybody, i bought a 1987 9.9 susuki this summer and check it in a drum, starts ok, on the lake, hard to start, and finally runs at idle well, then go fast for few minutes, no problems, after four hours of fishing, it stall and never start again. After many checks in the forest, i stop to hope and row my boat.

Arriving at home, i changed diaphragm kit of gas pump, sparks plug, clean the carb, by-pass kill switch and oil injection, (remove shaft from the pump) and bought a new thank and hose, never start anymore. Finally bring it to the mechanic to check my works and find the trouble, and told me that my job was ok. fire is good, he ckecked coil and wires, fly wheel, he checked the compression of cylinder and it was 105 for the top cylinder and 95 for the lower cylinder, he said it was the trouble and need to rebuilt the engine.......(for 700$), before to pay that i want to be sure that he doesn't forgot to check something else, because some friends told me that the compression is not the best, but should start with 95 and 105. I'd be very happy if somebody tell me to check something else. Thank you for all the thing about mechanic i learned since i read this forum.

Re: Suzuki 9.9 impossible to start

Welcome to iBoats ....... well the compression is not great, but the engine should run fine though ..... if you have spark and everything else is ok, then you have a fuel problem ..... you either need to rebuild your carbs again properly with carb cleaner and compressed air .... make sure your fuel/air screws on the carbs are set 1 & 1/2 turns outwards from soft stop ...... when the carbs are off you can just might as well have a look at the reed valves ... they sit just behind the carbs ...... now that you disconnected the oil injection you mix the fuel 50:1 with outboard motor oil right?

Thanks deejaycee, i'll check the carb again with cleaner and air. what is the screw at the low side of the bowl cap,(not the one to remove it) there is a spring, if it's not close hard the gas flow. I also put a new bowl cap o-ring.i have also put gas directly in the carb (in the hole for the choke) nothing happen, the gas don't arrive on the spark plugs. Finally, what can be the problem with the reed valve, can i see easily if it's not ok.

the screw with the spring on it, is the air/fuel mix screw and should be turn inwards to soft stop, then turn it outwards 1 1/2 turns outwards .... the screw on the fuel bowl is the drain screw ..... if fuel is running out the carbs it means the needle is stuck ...... you needs to see if the reed valve plates are still clean and all in the same condition ....
