I have a mercury 35 hp outboard and it won't start. I tried replacing the coil with a new one and nothing. We noticed the wires all over were damaged ad burnt and we repaired them by splicing them, electrical taping them together. nothing happens, its doesnt even try to spark. The motor has great compression ,you can hear it, but the pull string is very very difficult to pull, i got sores all over my hands i cant pull it anymore, lol, literally. I did notice the carb drips alot when i pump gas into the carb. its leaky. I dont have the money to have someone look at it , so please help me cause it seems to b a good motor, the serial number is 0149149 35 hp mercury i dunno the year please help me an tell me wbere to go from here. thanks - Josh

Sounds like that motor needs to go in for major heart surgery, theirs only one way to burn all your wiring and thats by overheating your motor or in your case it sounds like its been cookin. Electrical tape doesn't cut it either, it reacts with petrol and other substances and becomes sticky which will just end up shorting out anyway, you really need shrink wrap or split tube covering all of those exposed wires. 35s are hard to pull, old ones anyway their not like a little 8 horsie, I need two hands on mine, lucky its been converted to electric, can you detemine where its leaking, Might need a carb rebuild kit to start with anyway!

Thanks for the response. I tried typing last night before I went to bed seeing double vision, I couldn't even type, sorry bout that, was just tryin' to get the words up before I fell out.

It has been sitting up for 2 years if that helps any.
It started with it reving up, then conking out. Finally I just put it up.
It's just not getting a spark at all.

The compression checks out so I know it's not dead.
The wires weren't cooked just like grounded and frayed and some were melted a little. Understand, I bought this from a pawn shop for 500 bucks.
I ran fine when they displayed it to me.

I have ran it once since I got it. I know its a good motor so im getting aggrevated with myself for not knowing more about motors.

Maybe the entire wiring needs to be replaced? Thats the only thing I can think of since it's not getting a sparks with new plugs and coils?

Also when you say heart surgery what do u exactly mean?

Thanks again

"Heart surgery"That was my attempt at humour (yeah I wont quit my day job). In youre otiginal post when you said all your wires were burnt I assumed the engine had overheated if their just frayed thats a different story, still I'd be rewiring if their frayed and some are melted, also if your carbs leaking its not getting enough fuel so you'll have to fix that also. sometimes a quick trip to the mechanic can save you time and money, it might be something simple!

Yeah I thought they were burnt until closer observation. The were mostly just corroded to the point it looked like they were burnt.

What kinda wiring would you recommend me to use to rewire?

Shoulda I just get a carb kit and go from there. I know the top of the motor where the lid comes off, rubs right on the wiring box and those wires have taking a beating through the years from taking it on and off. im just nervous taking off a bunch of wires.

Would using the same wires do?

I would go to a mechanic but i really dont have the 125 an hour they want me to pay. this sucks big time

do those subscripton manuals help any? i'll get that and try it out?

Thanks bro

Take it one step at a time. Note how many wire colors you have. Go to the parts store and get some marine grade wire the same gauge, in those colors. Now carefully replace the damaged wires. Then do a compression test to check compression...you can get a gauge for about $10. Then post your model and serial number so we can date it for you. No spark generally means a bad coil or dirty points on a magneto ignition but could be lot of things if its a later solid state ignition. The model/serial number will help you get the right answers along the way. Post those numbers and tell what kind of compression it has.

The serial # doesn't match with anything. Look at maxrules.com or themarinedoctor.com for the year.

sorry if i sound dumb, well, not really, cause i am dumb as nails when it comes to outboard motors, but what is the '' points " and how many are theyre and where are they located generally?

Also, from what i've seen soo far i have a 1987 mercury 35, what compression and i looking for?

After someone answers i'll check it all out and get back to ya.

p.s. you can quit laughing now :)

If it's an 87 you have some form of solid-state ignition, points probably won't enter the picture. You should have more thann 100 lbs. compression on both cylinders, within 10-15 percent of each other. If one is way lower than the other, there's a problem inside...that gets way expensive.
