Hi to everybody here .

I have a evinrude 6HP FISHERMAN 6002B B 18561 i dont know the year of it those are numbers on a side plate on shaft also same on engine block stamped on a disc core plug. I have a problem with the motor i have only just bought it 2 mths ago but the guy i bought it off had it serviced 8 mths ago since then its been stood .Till yesterday i took it out for a test run on my boat it was hard to start at first but i eventully got it to run the problem is i stopped it to anchor up the it would not start for a while eventully it did. Once i was back in harbour i did same thing then tried to restart but no joy at all this time i gave up.Also i did find it will not tick over i had to keep revs on and it would only start on full throttle not in the start position as marked on the revs arm. Can someone please advise to where the problem lies:confused: . Thank you

Re: Evinrude 6 Fisherman

not sure of the year either. I think the B might mean it is a Belgium motor. My 65 fisherman did the same thing. Turned out it was a sticky carb float. The old floats did not have the clip to hook the needle valve to the float and mine was sticking closed. I rebuilt the carb with a new kit and clip and it was fine after that.

It's a 1970. Probably has bad (cracked) coils. At least that's the first place you should be looking....After a compression test. Is the paint burned or discolored on the head? Check back if that isn't the problem.

Thank you for your replies No there is no burnt paint on head its as new . The compression is ok to it ran and push boat threw the water no problems on a 11ft firberglass body loaded with 3 men and gear. I have had another look on serial plate and it is a belgium motor . Do you still think coils it was fully serviced 8mths ago and ran ok then also its been stored inside.

Do I still think coils? Well let's just say I would be looking there. Since it is a 1970 it is kind of an educated guess. If it were a couple of years older, I would say absolutely. It is age that gets them. They kept making changes to the coils' covering down through the years to try to prevent the problem. It is 37 years old you know. Past history got nothing to do with it.

If you cannot adjust the slow speed needle and get a satisfactory idle, you probably will have to clean the carburetor. That is not the only possibility though.

I am totally ignorant concering metric measurements. The mix is 50:1, however that translates. Here in the swamps it is 1 pint of oil to 6 gallons of gas.
