Gotta question. I'm currently using a 8x7 1/4 2 blade prop. It seems that the engine is running at full rpm (at least without checkin with rpm gauge) I have a 14ft semi-v with me 185lb my boy 35lb and trollin motor gear and it'll run it's butt off at 8mph. I think this motor has plenty of beef to push a little more pitch at the prop. Does anyone have any input on the size I should go too? And of course because it's gettin to be an older engine where? Thanks for all replies in advance.

Im running a 74' Johnson 6hp short shaft and I think the same prop as you. I weigh 210, wife 130. 14' shallow and narrow aluminum boat and I getting twice your speed. Im not sure of my prop size but it is a 2 blade and is 7 1/2" from tip to tip . Mine runs better at the second notch from the bottom and the bigger fin on the foot is just right below the bottom of the 25" transom.

Fishermanms,

The trim settings you described are what I'm at, I've played with all the trim levels I just listen to the engine and feel I'm under proped or maybe my boat is just gettin old and floppy and isn't hittin the water as hard as yours is. Thanks for the input, I know this engine has more to give.

Maybe you need to check your compression, fuel delivery and ignition. There are plenty of threads on here on how to do all that. Also the weigh and design of your boat as well as weigh distribution. Sounds as though the stern my be top heavy for getting up near to plane for speed..... Just a thought..

If the motor is sound 8 X 7 1/4 sounds right to me.If it is a bare bones boat with careful set up and weight distribution it might actually plane.
Place your tank forward keep the battery and trolling motor out of the stern.
with that motor and that weight more pitch is not the answer.
There is a discussion about a 5.5hp. over in the Evinrude Johnson section.
Take a look there.
