Re: winters coming

Lube the grease zerts, change the lower unt lube, fog the cyls while running the fuel out of the carbs and last clean the outside of the engine and wipe it with a anti corrosion product

A grease zerk is a small metal nipple that a grease gun connects to and allows you to pump grease into areas that would otherwise be unreachable. Fogging the cylinders is spraying fogging oil into the carburetor throats until the engine stalls and then removing all of the spark plugs and spraying fluid into each of the cylinders. After doing this put the spark plugs back in and crank the engine to distribute the oil in the cylinders (do not allow the engine to start while doing this so remove the kill switch lanyard). Also make sure you remove the propeller and grease the propeller shaft.

Re: winters coming

Martin, this may help we fog a couple hundred boats a season and we mix a anti sling oil which is a fancy name for bar and chain oil, I don't know if either ae available to you at 12 to1 warm the engine to running tempiture and hook the mixture to the engines fuel line then run the engine at about 1500 RPM for about 5 minutes on it telegraphing the choke then disconnecting the fuel line and running the carbs dry while contiueing to load the engine with choke. This does not require oiling the cyls. with a squirt can and the oil rich fuel don't varnish the carbs.

Re: winters coming

There are a couple of schools of thought regarding running the fuel out of the engine. First, you cannot get all of the fuel out of the carb in that fashion so that leaves more room for air inside the carb. Here in the upper midwest, we see temps in -30 degree F range so we know about motor storage. It is suggested that you add a product like Stabil to the fuel. Stabil and similar products are fuel stabilizers that keeps the fuel from turning to varnish. Run the engine to ensure that additive has entered the engine. Then change the lower unit lub, and follow that with the fogging process. Put the engine to bed for the winter. If you are in a coastal area you might want to spray the power head with a protective spray product. A local marine dealer would suggest a suitable product.
