I don't know what your shifter rod looks like but mine on my 1978 85 hp Evinrude has a angle and it goes towards the front of the motor. Also I had to move my shifter alittle to get mine to line back up. Hope this helps. Do you have a manual?

Re: NEW POSTER cant get a response

The length of the shift rod is critical AND adjustable. Did you turn the shift rod when you had it apart? If the shift rod length is correct and the gearbox is set to neutral and the shift linkage in the neutral position, the hole should align. I don't have a book to tell me what the shift rod length should be for your motor. Perhaps someone else does. Otherwise, make sure the gearbox is in neutral, disconnect the shift cable so the linkage moves freely and you should be able to align the hole.

If your gearcase is in neutral, the propeller will spin freely.

Re: NEW POSTER cant get a response

When I did mine the first time I had a tough time getting it to line back up. The main thing as asked above did you turn the shift rod itself? By turning it you change the length either longer or shorter. It MUST be at the exact length specified or it will never function properly. If you didnt turn it at all you should be fine to bolt it right back up. If it has an angle on the top (7) kind of like that it goes toward the front(bow) usually on mine I will put it in reverse before trying to remove the linkage bolt as this gets it into a much better spot to remove the bolt/pin. Once removed the mounting bracket will move a little so I have to have someone move it (control lever) ever so slightly to help it line up. The main thing is NOT to turn the shift rod. If you look close you can see about 1/2" of the shift rod exposed under the motor cowl this is a good place to grab it with some long needle nose pliers to slightly turn it if need be to line it up better. Also you can take a hanger and bend it to fit through the mounting bracket and through the shift rod to help line it up while you get the bolt/pin ready to reinstall. a long 1/4" extension with the bolt taped in really helps with the reinstall. Good luck and keep at it can be a real bear sometimes. If you did turn the shift rod a few full turns one way or another you will need to get that adjusted back to spec before you install the lu. I dont have the measurement for your exact engine but I'm sure someone here would and could tell you exactly how to fix it.

Put the shifter in forwad & see the direction of movement on the rod. Put the gear box in forward by moving it in the same direction. Then you can turn the prop to align the splines on the drive shaft.

Well, now you've done it...:) You'd better up your intended sale price about $20 and get a manual. It can be done fairly easily without a manual, but you can already see how much trouble you can get into if you go by "instinct". Plus, the manual should give you what you need to readjust the shift rod length.
