The connection is at the end of two parallel bars [bellcrank], centered under the carburetors. the disconnect is a bolt, from the starboard front, midway of the bellcrank, and usually must be removed. The two parallel bars are then spread at the shift rod to release it.
It is generally easier to disconnect the cables. I like to spread a cloth under the bellcrank in case I drop anything. Old timers often take the carbs off as part of a more comprehensive maintenance schedule.
