Mercury 60hp - what year? (and help getting started...)

Been looking for 2 years for the right one - I finally got my first boat yesterday! I traded a $25 riding mower for it (gotta love Craigslist...). We were both happy. Anyhow....

Serial number is 6550605. I was told it's maybe a mid-90's model. Anyone know what year?

Are there any scanned manuals online, or should I start looking at ebay for one? 40:1 mix? (just guessing)

The trim wouldn't go down, so PO drained the fluid to lower the outboard, so he could see if it would turn over. I disconnected the linkage so we could prop it up for the ride home. I have no idea on where/how to refill/purge this thing. Any ideas on where to find that info?

The engine is a 1985, inside the boat you will find the pump(follow the hoses) on one corner of the pump there is a indention on it there is a slotted screw remove it and fill to the screw level install the screw and run the engine up pull the screw and refill, then run the tilt up and down a few times to help bleed the system then tilt up and refill

Thanks - I will try that this week. I found a label on it that called for 10W-30, that makes things a little easier.

Got it working! I filled with 10W-30. I have a big screw (as mentioned above) and there is a smaller hole on the very top of the reservior where oil would spill out when the pump ran. There was a spare screw sitting near it (remember, I don't know this thing's history) so I plugged that top hole with the screw. Doesn't seem to leak too much now. I'll keep an eye on it.

Don't plur the hole, it's the vent and if plud it will force oil into the motor and ruin it, if the system is bleed out lossen a outside line till the oil level quits squirting oil. The system shuld be filled to the fill hole when the engine is all the way up
