Mercury 2001 150 efi shift noise

I just bought a used mercury efi 150 outboard. Starts up fine runs great. The problem is when shifting into gear both forward and reverse I get a gear like grinding sound before it kicks in. Does any one know what is causing this. I have a 90 day warranty with the boat dealer where I bought it. I just don't want to be songed and danced about it. Also doe's any one know of any other problems or advice about this engine. THANKS

I don't know what kind of grinding you get, but you should make a fast positive shift, not a slow one. There may be a little adjustment, but if it does it both ways, I don't think you can adjust that. Maybe somebody w/more knowledge will chime in here.

Like gss said, the shift process should be clean, rapid, and crisp. With that, you will get a clunk response. Same for F or R even though the engagement of F is sawtoothed (overrun clutch) and R is usually square cogs in square holes.

Since you said you have it in F and R I'd rule out improper shifter alignment. Additionally, since you said you have it in F and R you are using two different sets of gears and both would have to be worn excessively.

The shifter, in the gearbox is spring loaded and even if the spring were weak, I'd doubt you would have the same problem in both directions as one direction compresses it and the other allows it to relax.

Try the shifting etiquette and get back.
