I need some opinions on the best way to adhere new wood for my transom to the fiberglass hull. I am talking about material, i.e., 1 layer of 3 oz mat and epoxy resin.

there are alot of posts on the site about it, i would of used sea cast personally. but i suppose more redin then somehow press the peices to the hull, i think people use screws then fill the holes with resin or the marine sealant. than mat the edges to the hull then mat the other side to it and then mat the side of that also. sand and paint.

the boat didn't have wood sandwitched between fiberglass. It is fiberglass on the outside and wood on the inside so I would need to build a dam to create a cavity to pour the seacast into. I need to know what bonding material I should use to bond the wood to the hull for the transom.

Re: new transom wood to hull??

When I did mine I used I think about 3 or 4 layers of woven roven with vynlester resin and 2 layers of 6(?)oz cloth inbetween each layer of roven. All laid up at the same time, one layer at a time, to create a nice permanent bond. Lots of prep work involved on the hull and maybe a little overdone on my part with the layup but strong! To bond the wood to the outside transom, I had my motor mount holes, drain hole, tie down holes all drilled in the wood and used a vynlester/fiberglass paste and bolts to hold it all in place while it set along with some clamps on the outside edge. Hope this helps and hope someone else chimes in with their experience.

like said, i would bond it in layers with resin and fiberglass to the outside then evantually build it up the front and sides. Like said above use clamps, and small screws that can be filled afterward.

fiberglass putty fillets along the inside corners will allow you to lay the cloth in without air getting in the corners.

Good stuff folks. Thanks. As far as I am concerned, overkill is a good thing. I only want to do this once.
