Repower for resale value?

Hey guys -

I'm working on my boat, about to make the big investment on an engine, and I have a question: Should I go new or reman if I'm planning on selling in a couple of years?

If I get a new engine now and take care of it (maint. records and such) will it make the boat a lot easier to sell, or worth more, than if I just stick in a reman engine now and keep track of the same things?

Is it worth the extra $1000 to get a new block as opposed to reman? It's a chevy 350 if that makes a difference.

Thanks,
Erik

How about something like this?
IMO, there will be no significant resale value on an engine that is out of warranty.....

Wow... hmmm.

I was thinking my choice was between a rapido long block and a michigan motorz new marine engine.. but that one looks very, very nice for the price, and it's only about $150 more than the rapido. I'd have to put in the work to convert it to marine (head gaskets and marine bolt-ons) of course.

Great, now I'm even more stuck :) The only thing the michiganmotors has going for it at this point is that it's marine built and has the harmonic balancer installed. And some kind of warranty.. I'm guessing from the text on the linked page above that boat use would be "out of spec" for the warranty?

Re: Repower for resale value?

Heh, I went with the rapido.

The other is a new engine, but Rapido gave me two things I wanted:

1) No need to take off and replace the heads again, so no need to get valve lash set correctly.

2) An installed performance cam and springs for a few extra HP.

Plus they were actually the cheapest of the three, even considering the new tin you get with a GM crate motor. I have the old tin from my existing motor so I'll re-use that, along with all the bolt-ons.

We'll see what happens - I'll open a new thread with pictures to document things.

I also forgot - no need to buy and replace the freeze plugs again.

Raul said he'd ship it before the weekend, and 3 days after that I should have it, so I'm going to shoot for having my transom kit back on by then, and being ready for sea trials after I get the motor built and in. The season isn't over yet!

i think a rebuild/reman or new motor will add value to the boat. If for no other reason than you have a newer motor in the boat rather than one that has 450 hours or more. Jsut less chance of something bad happening IMO. I personally would be willing to pay a little more for a boat that has a rebuilt motor than the motor that it came with and its 12-15 years old. if the person can show me the receipts and prove the hours on the new motor Id be mroe willing to pay more. besides its a selling point. if you had two super duper x300 boats and they were both in the same condition and they qwere both lets say 12 years old one had a new motor the other had the original and the price difference was 1000$ Id be more willing to get the one that had the fresher motor. yeah the new motor could break also but the chances are better it wouldnt.

Ayuh,......... Can't argue your logic Rob,....

But I don't think I'd be swayed by whether it's a New Rebuilt motor,.......
Or a Brand New Crate motor............
And,.........
Even "super duper x300 boats" that Don't Run,+ Need a motor,..........
Are more of a Liability than an Asset...........
