I have a mercury 3.3 hp outboard motor, and I was wondering if I could use regular 2-cycle engine oil that is for air-cooled engines. I have been using it in the motor, but I don't want to damage it so any info would help. Thanks.

no
use oils with a TCW-3 rating. most 2 stoke oils for chainsaws, bikes, etc don't have that. the better oils will smoke a bit less

Re: 2 cycle fuel question

Citgo has a 2-cycle oil that the label says can be used for both water-cooled and air-cooled engines, and meets TC-W3 requirements. I bought a quart the other day, but after reading various threads on this website (lots of great info and advice here, by the way), I was wondering if I should trust it or not. I have a Stihl chainsaw and trimmer, and an old Merc75 that all use 50:1, so it would be convenient to use one mix for everything (fresher fuel). Sorry if I'm hijacking your thread nickandm, but this sort of applies to your orginal question too. Does anyone have experience with this type of dual purpose oil? or does it compromise both applications? Thanks.

Re: 2 cycle fuel question

The only experience I had has been involving Klotz synthetic motorcycle racing oil in a chain saw. I burnt up my new Husky using it. The cylinder was so scored that I lost compression, plus, I think the ring was also stuck. Lots of carbon inside. So now I use STIHL synthetic chain saw oil in my Husky.
