Remove the spark plugs. Disconnect the large RED electrical plug at the engine. Crank the engine by engaging the starter solenoid with a small jumper (battery term of sol to small 3/8" sol nut, not the grd nut).

Spark should jump a 7/16" gap.

If you now have proper spark, replace the ignition switch as it is more than likely shorted out.

If still no spark or extremely weak spark, that is usually due to a failed stator.

How are you testing the spark, with a spark tester with a known gap or some other way?

All of the spark plugs must be removed and the engine must be cranking over at least 300 rpm in order for ther stator to energize the ignition. If you have a weak battery...... a slow cranking engine, there is no way that you can check the igntion/spark. How are you in this area?

If there are any cracks and a substance dripping out of the stator down on the timer base and powerhead, it is faulty regardless of what reading you obtain. Does this substance dripping condition exist?

Just a note, I was on Ebay last night and they had 2-3 stators for this engine for 75-115 dollars so if it is bad I would start there.

I don't have the 1987 service manual on hand and can't remember the actual ohm requirements for that stator. Hopefully someone will jump in here with those specifications.

Stator reisistance should be 450-550 ohms with 150v connected to the pack.

I have the same motor. You cannot read the voltage with just a digital multimeter. Make sure you have a DVA (digital voltage adaptor) connected to your meter. Or your readings will be all screwed up. I have the same problem my timer base looks good but the resistance is off. I am finding alot of posts stating on 70hp timer base causes one cylinder not to fire. T Fish

Here is a thought.

Try connecting the coil of a non-sparking plug to the pack terminals of a working plug. If it now has sparks it would seem to point towards a bad ignition pack and for sure prove that the coil(s) are good or bad.

Also, did you acquire a DVA yet to test the charge coil output? It is high frequency AC so a normal multimeter, even when set to measure AC, won't be able to do it. I checked mine out with an oscilloscope, but a multimeter that can do a true "RMS" measure would also work.
