Hello there,
These are the photos of 1988 60 HP Evinrude. I was told that it had pistons & rings replaced (pistons looked brand new when examined from spark plug point of view), as well as water pump impeller. It requires a squirt of ether to start up ? I am trying to wean it off. Concern I am having is that it appears to be spitting water out of places I have never seen outboard squirt water. It also seeps oil & water emulsion from the seam above the lower unit. I do not think it is lower unit grease since I just replaced it; this stuff that is coming out seems to be pitch black. Water does come out from the top of the engine as well, through the outlet / hose; that one is warm ? so I suspect it does what is meant to do. The water coming out from the middle of the engine is cold ? feels just like straight garden hose water coming from the muffs.
Can you please examine these photos and let me know if what I am seeing is OK (is that unburned fuel / oil mix) or there is something awry that needs immediate attention.
Thanks,
Milo

I am not an expert, but cold water in that location would seem to indicate you have a leak in the water tube before the motor. Might be (not necessarily) a crack in the water tube in the upper case. The black you are seeing is the water mixing with the carbon from the exhaust and seeping out

drop the lower unit and see if the water tube is hooked up all the way and the grommet is still good in the upper and lower connection for it.

Relax. Everything in the picture is normal.

The cold water coming from the mounts area is water that has escaped around the drive shaft hole through the water pump housing. Large drain holes are provided to drain it off so it doesn't rise up to the powerhead and cause damage.

The seam that all the gunk is coming from is supposed to be sealed with Adhesive M whenever the lower unit is removed and reinstalled. However, the sealant is only for cosmetic reasons and to prevent people from frieking out when they see the ooze. Except for making a mess, it won't hurt a thing. The stuff coming out there was headed for discharge thorough the center of the propeller anyway.

Thank you all,
I gather then that this is as expected and that I should not be alarmed on the account of it. Please do let me know if that is a wrong approach to this matter.
Thanks,
Milo
