I have a Johnson 1960 75 HP, the last time that the engine ran was in 1984. I have replaced the ignition coil, the points and condensors, and the spark plugs. I also have a carb kit and a fuel pump kit on the way to rebuild each. I also have plans to replace all of the vacuum and gas lines due to the age.

Are there any other things that I should investigate before I put it in the lake?

Don't forget to change the LU oil. There is a great article on the forum called 'Awakening a sleeping outboard', or something similar. I believe it is in the FAQ section.

Can I just replace the impeller, or does the entire water pump need to be rebuilt?

The water pump housing and plate may need to be replaced too if they're scored. It's always a good idea to replace them too...before they're NLA.

Just got a water pump kit in, and rebuilt the pump. The plate was scored some.
