Hello All,
First let me apologize as I am new to boating in case a ask some real newbie questions.
My boat has an '86 150hp Mercury outboard and the only way to start it is if I open the throttle to full, in neutral obviously, and once it fires pull it back to idle. I have done a couple searches and it seems there is nothing wrong with doing so. It doesn't matter if it is a cold and hot start. Still have to open it up full. Just want to get some input on this.
Also the motor does and did have oil injection which was removed by the previous owner and just mixes the oil with the gas. As I have learned there is nothing wrong with doing this and actually provides some added security for the motor. The only issue this poses is when the motor is running the low oil alarm is keeps buzzing. Wanted to see if anyone has insight on how I can by-pass the alarm. There are two wires off the alarm, white and light green. I tried disconnecting the white wire but it prevents me from starting the motor. Any thoughts??? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

I did a little more searching and came across this.

Not sure if this will pertains to my motor and if the block off kit will fit.

I believe the pump is actually still on the motor. If I am looking at the right part. It appears there is an in and out on the pump. It looks like the tank was removed and the in line was just connect to the out or looped. There appears to also be a mechanical valve (ball and push ride setup). The ball as nothing connecting to it.

There is a block off kit to remove the pump. If you leave it on, it could fail, leaving parts in the motor. If you remove it, a bushing could fall into the motor and cause trouble. The block off kit holds the loose bushing in place.

The oil warning unit on that engine is a stand alone piece. If you just remove it, it should be fine. Leave the head temp switch wire in place where there were 3 wires together. One to the oil monitor, one to the head temp switch, and the other to the harness -alarm.

oil monitor has 1 power wire, one alarm wire, 2 motion wires, 2 level wires, and 1 ground.

hope it helps

Thanks John. Most of this has been removed already. I will have to check the wiring diagram under the rear hatch panel. If you happen to know the color of the wires that would be extremely helpful. I do know the water temp sensor is a tan wire used to test the alarm for over heating. I need to make sure the alarm is not going off for overheating!!!! I don't think it is or it is a bad sensor as I recall I get a constant beep after the motor starts when it is cold.

First Advice ...get the manual. If you disconnect the green wire the buzzer will stop for oil...however the oil warning is an intemittent beep. If it is a stready beep, it is a cooling problem.

Thank you for the feedback. I don't know how to read the beeps. It is a steady beep. I do have good flow out the pee hole but that doesn't mean much. I was going to try starting the motor cold and if there was no beep for a minute after starting I would know that is the issue.

I should also point out I am doing this out of the water using the rabbit ears. I don't let the motor run much over a minute or two using this method and know not to rev it up. What is the protocol for using rabbit ears???

I do have the Seloc manual, please let me know if there is a better one. A water pump rebuild is also on the list to do.
