Looking down at the impeller on the drive shaft and the gearcase housing cover, rotating the drive shaft in a counter-clockwise rotation while sliding the impeller pump cover over the impeller, which direction should the impeller vains be bent? Left or right? Clymer manual shows picture but doesnt say if your looking up into the cover or down on the gearcase housing. Thanks For The Info

Turn the shaft clockwise as your looking down at the whole assembly, pushing the cover down over the well lubricated impeller (liquid dish soap).

Re: 1989-85hp impeller direction

I found the directions in the manual that says , counter clockwise as your putting it into the housing cover. then that would intern be clockwise on theplate looking down. Is there any kind of seal between the pump outlet and the water tube that goes up to the motor. I dont think the lower unit would go on if they didnt line up. thanks

nun on my 1984 85 hp. once they line up, all goes well.

Mikdee's replys are correct on assembly. I did mine that way, not problems at all.

Good luck,

Mike

If the manual has you putting it into the pump housing before putting it on the shaft, then the pump housing is upside-down and of course, you need to turn it counter clockwise so that the vanes will be bent in the proper direction when you install it on the shaft. The engine turns CLOCKWISE so when you put the impeller on the shaft first (BETTER WAY) then you turn the shaft CLOCKWISE when lowering the pump housing onto it.

Frank is absolutely correct!!! Turn shaft clockwise and slide housing down on to it. Don't forget to use some Vaseline or white grease to lube the housing with.
