If you can find braided 5/16" hose, sure.

Of course. In many cases it might even be better. But I've had problems sometimes on older motors with the new car hose being too big outside and/or not flexible enough.

Nearly all 'Marine' hoses are the same as automotive hoses. The only difference is that you pay $1.25 at the Auto Store and $6.25 at the boat store. ;) Around here both of the hoses will say 'Goodyear' on them, and be the exact same hose. :) The only time I've run across a different hose is when I was replacing the fuel line from my boats hull that goes to the primer bulb. In this case it was a 'Fire Retardant' hose, but all of them are nowadays anyway with the composition of rubber used.

Coast Guard approved marine fuel hose has to meet a number of specifications and fire retardency. It also has to be alcohol resistant and cannot allow a certain amount of fumes to permeate thru the covering. Car hoses do not have to have any of these safety concerns and they do not have bilges and enclosed compartments that can hold fumes and blow up and injure or kill people.

All CG approved hoses have the type printed every 12" inches long the lenght of the lines. 5/16" and the 3/8" hoses vary from around $1 a foot up to about $2.50 per ft.

Type A is flame proof for at least 2 minutes and is for enclosed areas such as from the tank to the transom. Type B in not flame proof and is commonly used in open areas and the outer diameter is less than Type A.
