Hi, posted this same question in the merc repair forum, but it might not have been an appropriate place.

buying a 9.9 for my boyfriend's birthday... for his 16' aluminum john boat. Need a 20" shaft, must be tiller steering, and I want electric start.

I found a great deal on a lightly used '06 Merc Bigfoot, still 2 yrs warranty. Its remote, but they can transfer it over to tiller for $200. Total cost would be $1850.

Or, I could pop $2600 for a new Honda '07 9.9 LS 4stroke, electric start, tiller steering.

I love my bf of course, but I wanna save as much $$ as possible ;) What would be the wise choice? We bass fish (fw) mainly and will occasionally go crabbing & flyfish back creeks (sw)

I'm doing some reading up here, and seems a couple of people have bought used bigfoots only to be dissapointed... though, I'm only looking at little kicker motors, so maybe i'm in a different ball field?

what should I look for, or ask the guys to show me before I pay for the thing?

thank you anyone... I really could use some advice. Tx!

Re: 9.9 merc BF vs Honda

Well the Merc is really a Tohatsu with different paint and a few minor differences

Who has the best service as it is hit and miss with all brands in different areas and a good dealer would make my pick

Re: 9.9 merc BF vs Honda

really?!? well, never heard of a tohatsu, but seeing as they're lumped together with honda & nissan, does that mean they're just as good?

if you were in need of a kicker motor, and your significant other were buying you one... which one do you wish they'd buy for you?

btw, thanks for the reply! Though I think the dealer I choose will be largely a leap of faith as I'm out of my relm here.

thank you!

Go with the Honda! I've actually kept my old Honda's and put them on a new boat and sold the new (other brand) engines with the old boat.
Honda, starts everytime and no fuss ... Oh yea, my wife likes the electric start on the Honda 15.
