I just replaced the impeller on my Johnson 140 and now I have a leak around the lower unit where it bolts up. When putting the impeller in, I had a hard time keeping it from rubbing the small round rubber gasket. Did I dislodge it and that's why it's leaking?
Also, noticed missing part that I saw on another lower unit. Shaped 4x3 rectangle bottom and then tapers off toward the top. I notice that I have a rubber gasket there, but not piece like I saw on another lower unit. Do I need that piece and what is it for? Help:confused:

No it's not part #45, but if you look at that chart and look below the number 5, you will see a rectangle that I have seen a part that fits there and is about 3-4 inches high and sort of offset toward the water pump and has a rectangle opening at the top of about 3x3. I saw it on a lower unit that I was looking at on ebay. I have the rubber gasket, but not that part. I don't know what it is....:(

Are you talking about the exhaust housing??

exhaust tube gasket (or rubber seal). not a big deal unless your venting the prop with your exhaust gasses. if it's not i wouldn't worry about it.. if it is.. then you know what you gotta do

I guess it is the exhaust housing? Do I need that part? Why would someone leave it out when putting lower unit back on? Anyway, does anyone know why I'm leaking water at the joint of the lower unit where it bolts up? thanks

My guess is they forgot to put it back in when they had the LU off and were too lazy to drop the LU again to install it so they just left it off. The water leaking around the seam is perfectly normal.

Is it ok if that part is not there or do I need to replace it? Also, I think the motor is running a little hot as I can't keep my hand on the motor. I have run it for a while, then I turn it off so it doesn't get too hot. I thought that the water may not be pumping at full capacity, but I'm getting water thru the pee hole.

That rubber o-ring/gasket could very well be why your motor is getting hot or if your running it on muffs you might not be getting enough water to the pump. Turn the water hose on full force.
I hold the rubber o-ring in with Hi_tack when I do a water pump.
