A hydrolocked salt water engine is gonna need WAYYYYYYYYYYY more than a kit.......you need to be shopping for a complete new (or rebuilt) engine.

The first step is to find out why the original engine locked up and repair/replace that problem.

Ayuh,....... Bomar is Right,.....

A Saltwater motor Won't look so Pretty when you get the Heads off it,.....
And,.... You'd better find out How the Saltwater got there.........

I'd be searching the Junkyards for a like vintage Ford Truck 351W to use that Kit on..........

Your motor probably is Anchor material...........

Take lots of pictures from every angle and direction of the motor before you take it apart. Where and how wires and hoses connect also.

Guys, he says it was a salt water boat, but that does not mean that it didn't have a clean water cooling system? Just that it was used in salt water (Or am I missing something?). Just trying to give some hope..

However the advise to take lots of pictures when dismantling the engine is GREAT advise!!

this boat has no freshwater cooling system on it .... it was taken to a shop and torn down... The shop said there was bad gaskets internally and thats how the water got in there ... They quoted 1200 for the job... I was going to strip it down and rebuild it for way less that that. I may get a rebuild from rapidio though

"this boat has no freshwater cooling system on it ", well bang goes any hope.. As the others suggested, I would look for a replacement engine. You don't say how long the engine has sat with the salt water inside, but it doesn't take very long for salt water to do damage to the machined parts in an engine. If you are mechanically competant, I would still take the heads off and drop the sump and look inside the cylinders and at the crank to get an idea if it's repairable, but a replacement engine is the easiest option.

I have may been misleading... the water was drained and flushed with fresh water... how ever ... the shop said it needs to have an overhaul on it ... thats all there is no salt water sitting in the engine or was there any sitting in there for more then a day before it was flushed

Which is still WAY TO LONG for salt water to be in it and have a useful core.

Re: First Marine Rebuild Advice

It was my experience that when I took my motor apart from salt water I was shocked to say the least from what I saw..it was ugly, real ugly. I was told by many rebuilders that they would not accept a salt water intruded core cause of future problems with bearing failure due to rust in oil galley ways leading to bearings. I did however rebuild mine..I baked it, blasted it, hot tanked it then soaked the parts in muriatic acid with all the plugs removed. I killed ALL the rust!

I suffered an over heat so the motor is done again after like 8 hours. Before I took the motor out I worked with it you know, compression test and all and got closer to the sound of the motor to hear how messed up it was and I did hear a journal knocking slightly in the rear main area. I will take this apart to see if this rust in the journals holes holds true..I think it does...ya just can't get all the rust out. I did buy a new crank, it was more work that it was worth with all the reaming and all.

Bottom line from my experience with salt rust inside a motor...I'm buying new.

Well It is done I will have some pics up this next weekend. I bought a 350 crusader and thanks to bond o dons s and other she is and running. I took her out all weekend and she ran great I put new exhaust manifolds and risers new steering system on it all I have left is a small water leak coming from the thru hull pipes which are original and I found out they are pvc wierd... but she sounds awesome and I got a great deal on the engine a crusader 350 power pack used with about 100 hrs but looked new great compression. It is a 330 hp from crusader and man she purrs... I am a little worries about the outdrive being a pre alhpa 260 like an alpha 1 but so far so good....
