Season opens this Saturday and a group of us are headed out on Sunday. I have been promised a nice place to sit and wait and hopefully we will see something.

Great time to tune up one of the rifles.

Good luck! What's the caliber of choice up there for bear?

Got a couple of friends that are heading up there to try their luck on a bear. The animals that I have seen coming from there are a bit smallish (about 150 lb), but that could be because they hunt a heavy pressure area.

Good luck, and get a big-un! Bear steaks! YUM!

Re: Bear (not naked) Hunting

Most of the people I hunt with and see hunting use 270, 308, 30-06 and my favorite 45-70. I will take out one of the 45-70 rifles and just sit. I am very comfortable with it out to 200 yds but the "average" shot you get around here is less than 100 yds. A few 243 hunters but I consider that too light for bear.

I just picked up a new to me 308 but the scope is not set up yet or I would have taken that along.

Yes, Art following the heart attack I decided not to turn down any opportunities to hunt, fish and play. :) I would be happy with a 150 bear for anyone we are hunting with.

I'm confused - you're hunting clothed bears? Excellent.

What da heck do ya do with bear? I hear they are tough and greazzy?

Nope, not greasy, and not tough either, a little grainy, but not tough. Kind of like a chuck steak. The meat is a bit sweater than beef (or maybe that is all the donuts consumed by the bears I have eaten). I like to get the bone out of the meat right away - have been told that will make the meat strong. I don't know if that is true or not, but all the bear I have eaten the bone was removed quickly and the meat was sweet.

Try a Coastal Grizzly.....inland bears tend to be a bit scrawny due to a comparitively diminished food source. I'm sure the Alaska/BC guys will wade in on this. Out here there are 30-50% bigger than inland...go figure.
