my wife and I just got our first boat this year. The engine is a 3.0l volvo how hot is too hot for this engine to run. It was sitting for the last year or so outside and I'm not sure what maintenance was done. I have the OEM manual on order so that I can change the impeller etc but in the mean time I would like to use the boat. what would be the normal operating temp for the motor.

Thanks

Before you get slammed. Give the guys a little more info. Year and make is a good starting point for these guys. Also if you have the number off the engine that would help too

usually, a raw water cooler engine will be a 140* t-stat. a fresh water cooled will be a 160*. they will be full open at aprox. + 20*.........to get the facts on your rig. get an oem service manual. it'll have the facts in it. not my generaly speakin terms..........

Re: how hot is too hot

IF it's over 180?, it's too hot. Between 170 and 180 are normal, and the gauges are normally quite accurate.

Click here and go to to marine engines. Scroll down to 3.0LGLP-A and download yourself an owners manual. It will have a lot of information you may need.

Be sure the cap on the engine flush hose is tightened properly. If it leaks, it sucks air and will cause overheats.

is this temp at normal 4000-4600 rpm like it says in the manual? I.E. might it get higher if I run it full out for a bit. It seems to get a bit over 180 (maybe 190ish) hard to tell b/c the gauge dosn't have that many tick marks so I am guessing a bit.

Thats still running too warm, better get the impeller changed for starters.Thats the first thing you should do on any boat you buy that you don't know the service history.

Get one of those IR temp guns and check at the temp sender and compare to the gauge reading on the inst. panel. The IR gun is going to be most accurate. If you are running 185 or 190, it's too hot. Not enough to damage the engine, but enough to cause heat problems with fuel and everything else inside that closed engine compartment.

After a WOT run my temp gets to about 195* after I slow down, then dips back down to 160-170ish after a couple mins. This is a closed cooling system, block only.

Re: how hot is too hot

When measuring with the IR temp gauge where is the most accurate place to take the measurement. The temp seems to vary a fair amount from one place on the block to another. Should I shoot it in between the brass drain petcocks or at the thermostat housing?

Take it at the sending unit. that way you can compare it with your gage reading.
